Which 2 friends will you tell?

We are excited to share some news with you! In partnership with the YMCA Calgary, we are starting a new movement:

#NoPhoneFamilyDay

That’s right – on February 20, 2017 – Family Day, we’re encouraging you to do three things:

1. Leave your phone on its charger

2. Make plans to get outside and active with your family

3. Make plans to stay inside, snuggle, read and create as a family.

Why are we considering this?

As you know, we’ve shared many statistics highlighting the disconnect that is happening in families. We believe that technology is an incredibly valuable tool. We also know that parents need to be intentional about its use.

In a recent study by AVG Technologies, over 6000 kids, (ages 8-13) from Brazil, Australia, Canada, France, The United Kingdom, Germany, The Czech Republic and the United States were surveyed. The results:

– 32% of children felt unimportant when their moms and dads were distracted by their phones. The kids said they had to compete with technology for their parents’ attention.

– 54 % of the kids think their parents spend too much time on their phones.

The Government of Alberta has designated February 20, 2017 as Family Day. This is an ideal opportunity to help parents set clear intentions about their technology use and their plan for connection to the family.

It’s a great start to modeling for your kids that the members of your family are capable of deciding when to pick up a phone and when to leave it be. Show your kids that they come first.

AND – We need a favour from you!

We need you to tell 2 friends about #NoPhoneFamilyDay. They’ll tell two friends and so on, and so on…

We will be posting and tweeting about #NoPhoneFamilyDay for the next month. Then, of course, we won’t be using our phones on February 20, 2017.

We want you to start sharing and talking about #NoPhoneFamilyDay so we can allow people to have the opportunity to truly experience this. We don’t want to leave anybody out.

This week, ask yourself these questions:

How will you spend #NoPhoneFamilyDay?

When will you start planning it with your family?

Which 2 friends will you tell first?

Follow us and share our posts! Let’s give everyone the chance to make it a #NoPhoneFamilyDay!
