Sports before chores? Why?
We encouraged you to spend the last week considering how you spend time at home with your family. What did you discover? Is it working out the way you want it to? We know that many families spend more time outside of the home because it seems easier and they don’t feel that they can rest and relax at home with their kids. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Today we focus on getting clear about time spent at home. Is there more nagging than conversation? Does it feel like there just isn’t enough time to do what you want to be doing? Are your expectations getting lost in the shuffle?
At Parenting Power, we believe that there is always enough time. The key is clarity. How do you want to be spending home time? How can your kids be helping out and giving back to the family? If it isn’t working out the way you want it to, you have the power to make it different.
Go back to your family values and the vision you have for your kids. Hold these ideas close to your heart while you ask yourself these questions:
Are you putting away your 2-year-old’s boots and coat when she comes home?
Does your 4-year-old get to go to gymnastics before her toys are cleaned up?
Does your 10-year-old start piano practice before his lunchbox is cleaned out?
Does a sports practice come before chores?
Is your teen studying for exams before her laundry is put away?
What are these actions and words teaching your child? Is that what you want?
Get clarity around what you truly want to teach your kids and how you want to spend time in your home. You can make it happen, one step at a time. Today is the perfect day to start.
