Responsibility for the Earth
The month of April has been designated Earth Month and we are taking advantage of that to focus on awareness and intentions around care for the earth.
The 4 Rs of Earth Month
This month we talk about Responsibility, Recycle, Reuse and Reduce.
Let’s start today with Responsibility.
What is our responsibility around this topic?
1. Get clear on what your family’s values are around responsibility to the planet and in caring for the environment.
2. Check in to see whether your daily actions are in line with these values. We know that actions are what truly teach our children.
3. Encourage your kids to take responsibility for the ways they want to help the planet.
So how do we do this?
Acknowledge what you are doing well in this area. Many families have systems in place that work on a daily and weekly basis.
Consider further changes you would like to make that are realistic for your family. It’s important to set yourself up for success by creating expectations that make sense for you rather than trying to be someone you are not.
This might be the topic for a family meeting this month. Invite family members to suggest an additional one or two changes to make for the month or the year.
Whatever you decide, keep the changes simple. Choose something that can be done consistently and plan the when/where/how components so that the changes can/will actually happen.
This week, ask yourself these questions:
What are our family’s values around responsibility to the earth?
How are we acting on these values?
Are we ready to do more?
What are some changes that the family would like?
How can we realistically apply these changes to our lives so that we can keep this consistent?
If you do decide to make changes, identifying clear action items (responsibilities) will help to solidify these new family habits.
